First Look: Oakley Flight Deck XM Prizm Snow Goggles

Newest addition to the golf equipment lineup is a pair of the Oakley Flight Deck XM goggles with Prizm Snow Hi Pink Iridium lenses.

I already have a pair of Oakley goggles with gray/black lenses, but those aren’t the greatest in flat lighting conditions. That’s why I went with the Pink Iridium. They’re supposed to be much better in flat light.

I’ll be testing these Oakley ski/snowboard goggles soon and posting a full review here. Stay tuned.

I was in a small avalanche

Had an interesting experience skiing at Alta Ski Area today. I was out in the boonies like I normally am. I stopped on a hillside where I was plotting the next run of deep powder I was going to take. I felt a poof above me and thought a skier was going by, but it wasn’t. Then I realized I was in a small avalanche. It hit me in the back and covered me up to about my waist, and went on by down the hill. Check out these two photos. Notice in the first photo way up below/right of the tree in the middle, you can see where the snow broke away. The 2nd photo was looking downhill. I’d say it was probably 20 feet wide by the time it hit me, and it probably traveled 150 yards. The most interesting, concerning, notable thing was that it was absolutely silent. I had no clue it was coming.

The avalanche came from above. Look closely where the snow breaks away.

I’m fine. Just had some snow covering my skis and legs. But had that been heavier and/or deeper snow, there may have been an issue.

New Rossignol Sky 7 HD’s

My old skis started to ooze black tar. That’s probably a sign you need new skis. So after a lot of research I narrowed it down to the Blizzard Bonifide and the Fischer Ranger 90 Ti. That’s why I ended up with the Rossignol Sky 7’s.

My sales guy at Utah Ski and See was very informative and helpful and after about 30 minutes of talking about my skill level, body size, ski style, and snow I typically ski in, we settled on the Rossi’s. I take them up for their first tracks in two days.

Can’t wait.

I need to post more here.

Near Death Experience Skiing

Ever have a near-death experience? This Main Chute on Mt. Baldy at Alta Ski Area. I stop by now and then to thank my old friend for chewing me up and spitting me out ALIVE.

Mt. Baldy Chute

I’ve heard I was the only one who fell the entire way from top to bottom and survived. I skied away with only a dislocated shoulder many years ago. Thanks again, old friend…

Local Advantages

One advantage to being a local here in Utah is that the resorts are 25 minutes from my house. If the weather or conditions are crappy, I can bail and come back another day.   Tourists, on the other hand, don’t have a choice.

Today was a prime example.

Upon arriving at Alta, the conditions were snowy, foggy, and flat.  The flat part is the worst.  Not being able to see the bumps and contours on runs can be dangerous.

Tomorrow is another day.  And tomorrow hopefully the sun will be shining because I’ll be back at Alta to give it another shot.
